Blue Dart Express Ltd, South Asia’s largest integrated air express, courier and logistics company, has set up a back-up technology hub in the city as part of its Business Contingency and Continuity Plan (BCCP).

The BCCP was aimed at ensuring that all centralised applications and web interface for its customers were made available to them seamlessly.

Speaking to newspersons here today, company Senior Vice-President (South II region) Gopinath Menon said Bangalore was chosen as it was strategically best suited to set up its back-up hub. The facility would be used as a real time switchover in the event of its main hub at its Mumbai headquarters failed. Before the setting up of the back-up facility, Mumbai hosted the the entire centralised applications and bluedart.com website, he said.

The back-up facility in Bangalore, part of the company’s Rs 25 crore million investment on IT, was set up mainly to cater to the growing size of its business and had nothing to do with the floods or the terrorist acts in Mumbai. ‘’This was planned years ago. We had no problems with our operations during floods in Mumbai in the last two years,'’ he said.

Mr Menon said the company had recently increased its air support of chartered flights to seven aircraft with the induction of two Boeing 757s. It also had five Boeing 737 operating each night to the seven metros in the country. It operated its flights at night to allow late cut-offs and early deliveries. The network was supported by sophisticated security system and x-ray machines, which eliminated the need for the mandatory cooling period imposed by passenger airlines.
